As a suggestion for the corroded engine mount. I once heard a smart tip of inflating a basketball underneath the engine so it lifts just enough as to unload the mount, then replace. Hope this helps 👍🏻

Fantastic video (as always) thanks for sharing. I see your wearing your Life jacket more, that's good to know, as the RNLI say "useless unless worn" 👍. Since having a heart attack 10 months ago i promised my wife no more single handed sailing😒 I now also wear a PLB (personal locator Beacon) with E.P.I.R.B & A.I.S.- M.O.B. transmitting, excellent, not cheap but i strongly recommend, accidentally set it off & it works, Phoned the STOP number immediately to cancel the activation, they work!! I sail the Irish sea & am based in Conwy North Wales, where we can get a 6kt tide running across the marina mouth at Springs and if you;d like a little Navigation timing excerise then you should try the our near by 'Swellies' on the Menai Straits. ( I have done both the Raz de Sein & Chenal du Four, My Favourite cruising area the Atlantic coast of France. Hope our paths cross at sometime, I'll love to meet you (or read your autobiography nudge-nudge wink- wink) the C9DP is on me! 🤗 Safe Sailing

Hi Patrick, breeze looked brisk and exciting, you were calm. On the engine mount subject. I've had a similar corrosion issue one side only, i replaced the mount to find it started again, i initially sprayed the new mount with a CRC product called soft seal until i could find time to look more closely. Its been so successful in 18 months, nil issue.

"Things don't naturally roll off the back of the boat there," said the sailor who had to replace his vanished bottle of priming diesel. ; -)

All those tools, that hardware, and the unrevealed materiel, yet, the spinnaker remains inoperable at this point. Why?

Two numbers for me in this. Bay of Biscay 30 times and timecode 23:38 with failed solar panels, the prospect of no more power for the autopilot, increasing winds thorough the night and the perils of starting the engine... where do you get that insouciance from?

I concur on the downwind with genoa. I prefer it as well, even if the tempo isn't the maximum possible, so much more comfortable and safe.

My two cents on reefing of the wind. Depower the main (ease sheet, vang and scandalize). Ease main halyard 1 foot. Trim reef lines tight. Ease main 1 more foot. Trim reef lines another tight. Keep repeating. This inching it down prevents getting looped on the lazy jacks or hooked on the shrouds. I love my asymmetrical spin as it makes sailing 145 TWA in 9 knots true fun. I don’t furl it and find that easier as the sail is much lighter to drag on deck than a sail with a cable. Enjoy. I am in Lorient now.

I had the same folding solar panels with the same problem: the connection between the panels is unshielded metal that corrodes and breaks. I sliced the fabric and soldered on proper wires and voila: worka like a charm again. 30 minutes work and some sail repair tape to cover up afterwards

Hi Patrick - we were interested in your "Downwind sail drop" as we tried it last year and failed miserably (the term "fiasco might be employed!! 😄) so at least we do not feel like "newbies" as we might have done if you made it look oh-so-easy!! Your Lewmar issue is something we have seen with other vertical windlasses and reinforces our belief that horizontal ones are better because they always seem to have encased motors. Finally, we have invested in a bottle of Chateau Neuf du Pape to see if it is worth the fuss 😮We were drinking Chateau Les Cruzelles at Xmas and it will be interesting to compare.

I have heard of people placing partially deflated fenders under their engines and then inflating to lift the engine slightly but have not had the need to try it myself. Our Volvo is in fresh water and I have not seen that level of corrosion. Thank you for the great videos, keep them coming!

I'd go for a zero and a gib whisker pole for windward jib. Because you'd also get maybe a bit more light upwind as a byproduct. Everything's a compromise.

You could try fitting a Cunningham led back to the cockpit, from the mainsail head that along with the halyard, you could push-me/pull-you the main down on the run. I suspect sheeting the boom off rigging may play a beneficial role if you try it. You may have to be creative with the vertical bit to stop mast slap......and it may simply not work. But trying it might provide you a character building exercise that I'm sure you would benefit from Pat. I think others may use a similar approach for cockpit based 3rd reefing. Go whole hog and fit both if they work😂. But I want a credit on the video (but only if it works).

You could half the materials' cost by swapping the mountings.

I'd always suspected your sailing technique to be scandalous. Actually, I thought a scandalised main was one that was backed (usually at the top). I've found that some boats are easier than others to raise the main. The best are those that have a button next to the winch. Perhaps you should buy a button. I've noticed that most swindlers sell them.

I used to scandalise the main when reefing because there is less leverage when lifting the boom from halfway. You can really ping the clew to the boom this way. I have in-mast now. Sooo much easier. Still mostly need to head up to reef though.

It seems that you never considered the use of a wind vane. Why?

So many companies have become masters of built in obsolescence instead of quality and repairability. They are basically raising a middle finger to us all and the planet. I had a crew member flicked over the side when unclipping the spinnaker pole on a 25 ft trailer sailor. The boat I crew on now has a permanent short strop at the mast for mast work.
